Behind the Lens

I'm Joey Mendolia, a Denver-based multimedia producer, photographer, and journalist. I founded Mendolia Media Productions after spending seven years making films and photo stories that have aired on PBS, NPR, and platforms around the world.

My background spans two sides of visual storytelling: the journalistic and the scientific. My training started with a bachelor’s in journalism from Boston University and master’s in environmental journalism from Northwestern University’s Medill School. I attained and additional master's in environmental sustainability from Indiana University, and I'm currently completing a PhD in Media Communications at Colorado State University, where my research focuses on how environmental stories change the way people think and act.

In the field, that means I know how to find the frame that makes a story land, whether I'm embedded with a conservation team in Alaska, documenting a corporate sustainability initiative, or shooting a real-estate campaign in Denver. I've earned a Northwest Regional Emmy nomination, a Regional Murrow Award for Best Documentary, and recognition from the AP, SPJ, and RTDNA.

I work with businesses, nonprofits, NGOs, academic institutions, and international organizations who need visual content that goes beyond good-looking. Content that communicates, persuades, and endures.
